Dubai Gold & Diamonds: Work-in-progress showing | Sophie-Therese Trenka-Dalton - Monday 27th @ 19.00

Familiar words, familiar themes, captured from a completely different perspective by German photographer Sophie-Therese Trenka-Dalton, our bangaloREsident@Pepper House. We are happy to announce the presentation of our artist in residency. Sophie's residency was in collaboration with our long-standing partner the Kochi Biennale Foundation and happened at pepper House in Fort Kochi. Besides working on a new chapter in her long-term project "Dubayyland", Sophie gave expression to her fascination for harbour traffic, coir and palm fronds and malls!

During her stay in Kerala, German artist and bangaloREsident@Pepper House, Sophie-Therese Trenka-Dalton collected material for «Gulfi», which she developed in continuation of her long-term project «Dubayyland» (since 2009). With this new chapter, the artist looks at the specific relationship between Kerala and the UAE.

At her work-in-progress showing, Sophie will present excerpts of the photo and video material collected in Kochi, Kozhikode and Malappuram. Specific districts with buildings, shops and advertisements that refer to the Gulf States and where the decades-long exchange of resources between the two places manifests.

During her residency at Pepper House in Fort Kochi, she filmed the marine traffic outside her studio window around Kochi's International Container Transshipment Terminal, which is operated by the Emirati Company Dubai Ports World (DP World).

The palm tree has been a recurring motive in Trenka-Dalton's work - in Kerala she investigated the production of coir (rope made of coconut fibre) from folklore to cooperative factory work and intentions of modernisation.
