Woman's day edition - Saturday 8th @ 19.00
In honor of International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month CounterCulture presents a showcase of some of the finest Indian women musicians.
The line-up includes: Shakthishree Gopalan, Alexis (The Band), Vasuda Sharma, Sulk Station – Tanvi Rao
Primarily trained in the Carnatic style of singing with an eclectic taste in music ranging from jazz, funk, RnB, trip-hop and easy listening to post punk, psychedelic and progressive rock, Shakthi loves to experiment with music. Her inspirations and influences are A R Rahman, M S Subhalakshmi, Nina Simone, Norah Jones, U2, Alexi Murdoch, Coldplay and John Mayer.
Shakthi has been writing songs since 2007 and has recorded some of her original compositions. She’s also been a recording artist as a playback singer for the Indian film industry since July 2008.
Alexis D’Souza spent 10 years of her life as a loud and proud piano geek, only to discover (through karaoke, no less) that she ought to just stick to singing. Suddenly in early 2012 and a small but meaningful repertoire of original music was born. Her biggest achievement, however, has to have been acquiring a group of bad-ass-boys who volunteered to play her girly-pop. A rising music sensation from Bangalore’s rooster.
Vasuda is a singer-songwriter,originally from New Delhi. Her music is a blend of Indian classical and folk music with western contemporary music.
She loves experimenting with different sounds and live looping combining both Indian and western influences. She functions as a one-woman band with a bit of beat-boxing, a few harmonies, and sings her own compositions over it.
She is currently working on her solo fusion album “Attuned Spirits” and her first single ‘Jaagi Jaagi Raina’ is already gaining popularity.
Sulk StationSulk Station is an electronic/trip-hop duo from Bangalore formed by Tanvi Rao and Rahul Giri in 2009. Their music is driven by Tanvi Rao’s sultry vocals wrapped in a haze of atmospherics, minimal beats and homegrown synth sounds. Their songs are a mix of contemporary electronic music genres (trip-hop/post-dubstep/ambient) with traces of Indian classical music.
Their debut album “Till you Appear” (self-released in early 2012) managed to accumulate praise from listeners, bloggers, critics and musicians alike. The album also earned them a slot at the World Event Young Artist festival held in Nottingham, UK.
With vocalist Tanvi Rao recently being nominated in the Best Female Vocalist category for the Jack Daniel’s Annual Rock Awards, Sulk Station are making waves across the country.

As part of its quarterly lecture series, the Tasveer Foundation is delighted to present a talk by Sujata Keshavan. The talk will trace the evolution of modern design in India from independence to the present. Keshavan's own role as a practitioner dovetails with roughly half this period. Her views therefore are informed by observation and experience from working in the field, rather than through academic research. In this talk, Keshavan will consider the social, political and economic contexts against which design as a profession has evolved in this country. She will analyse the factors that have influenced this journey, from the fledgling experiments in nation building in the fifties, to the impact of economic liberalization, as well as of globalization and technology in the nineties and thereafter. She will also examine the relationships between art, craft, technology and design.
Sujata Keshavan graduated from Yale University with a Master of Fine Arts degree specializing in Graphic Design in 1987. Her undergraduate degree was from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. In 1989, she founded Ray+Keshavan Design, widely regarded as India’s most influential design firm which has consistently been ranked by The Economic Times as India’s No 1 company in Brand Design. Ray+Keshavan was acquired by the WPP group in 2006 and is now part of the global design company, the Brand Union. Keshavan is regarded as a pioneer in developing the brand design industry in South Asia.
Keshavan has received numerous awards and served on the jury of design competitions around the world, including the Cannes jury in 2010 and D&AD jury 2014. She is currently on the World Economic Forum’s Global Council on Design and Innovation.

HeLa | Adura Onashile - from Wednesday 26th @ 20.00
In 1951 Henrietta Lacks walked into the coloured section of the John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore with a pain in her abdomen. A biopsy revealed a cancer that would kill her just months later. A cell sample taken without her permission was used as the raw material for some of the most important scientific discoveries of the past 100 years.
Against a backdrop that charts the scientific milestones of the HeLa cell line; this production seeks to bring Henrietta Lacks back to life, using testimony from her family members, the scientific community and the doctors that treated her. HeLa is an engaging exploration of the vast scientific progress made possible by the cells of one, unknown woman.

The W:O:A Metal Battle 2014 in India, supported by the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Bangalore kicks off in April with preliminary rounds in 6 cities - Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Guwahati and Kolkata. In Bangalore, the DATE TO SAVE is: April 27, 2014. Headliner LIVE on stage at every battle in every city: German Metal Titans SuidAkrA.
As a final curtain-raiser to this mega event, we present Vol. IV of Indian Heavy Metal in Wacken featuring Bangalore band Eccentric Pendulum, LIVE in concert.
Wacken is now firmly on the metal map of Bangalore in the shape of Bangalore Open Air which has seen three exciting editions so far. The Goethe-Institut is happy to support the Metal Battle at Bangalore Open Air, giving the winning band the unique opportunity to perform at Wacken - on a global stage before a global audience, along with top-billed international acts.
Eccentric Pendulum was formed in November 2008 in an amalgamation of musical ideas exchanged by the founding members of the band - Arun, Vibhas, Ashish and Nikhil. While maintaining progressive metal as their prime focus, the band composes songs combining elements from jazz, fusion and ambient resulting in an unconventional musical concoction.
In March 2009, the band released their debut EP titled The Sculptor of Negative Emotions at Bangalore's premier All Original Music Fest - Rock Ethos. The band's intention to deliver a package of high artistic value leads to stunning cover art by American artist Alex Eckman Lawn. In December 2009, the band was chosen to play at the Deccan Rock Festival alongside international metal heavyweights such as Textures and Amon Amarth and a host of handpicked Indian metal bands.
In 2011 Eccentric Pendulum took the stage at Wacken followed by a gig at Star Cafe in Paris. Their debut album Winding the Optics, mixed and mastered by Daniel Bernath at Uebersound Studios, Germany was officially released at these shows.

A satire on censorship, the play portrays the rivalry between two artists, in a country where artists are banned from using colour on canvas.
Don't Ask, Don't Tell | Ben J. Riepe & Navtej S. Johar - Thursday 13th @ 19.00
Don't Ask, Don't Tell investigates forms of sexual attraction and desire, of loneliness and rejection, ways of longing and belonging. Indian and European ways and how they are codified on stage.
The Indo-German project Don't Ask, Don't Tell marks a collaboration between the two choreographers Ben J. Riepe from Düsseldorf and Navtej S. Johar from New Delhi. They worked together - with equal involvement in India as well as in Germany - with an international cast of dancers, performers and musicians. Both choreographers wanted to test the possibilities and boundaries of live performance. Sound, image, feeling and motion are equal parts of the theatrical process.
Don't Ask, Don't TellDon't Ask, Don't Tell deals with anxiety and cultural codes of representing sexuality on stage. The piece is an interwoven collage of performance, live art and dance around the themes of the male body, belonging, sexual desires and borders of expression. Ben J. Riepe and Navtej S. Johar discovered a very sensitive way to abstract and express feelings of loneliness, longing, desire, intimacy and vulnerability. They have chosen a path that represents the body while concentrating on the individuality of the performers.

Vikram Sridhar is a storyteller who believes in storytelling as a strong medium for conservation. He takes the age old oral medium in a contemporary form to new age listeners. He is a theatre practitioner and has been in the English theatre space working with various groups for about seven years. His group, Tahatto , performs regularly at various spaces and festivals across India. Vikram has been quoted and written about in various media for his high energy and interactive mode of storytelling.
