QFF ENTERS IT’S 10th YEAR

Mattresses, movies and madness – the Bangalore Queer Film Festival (BQFF), perhaps the largest film festival to deal with LGBT themes in the south, is a yearly fixture in Bangalore’s cultural calendar. Run entirely by volunteers – a small group of friends – the festival is committed to the circulation of good queer cinema, including films from non-Western locations, films by independent filmmakers, popular cinema that experiments with LGBT concerns, and experimental films that push aesthetic limits. BQFF has brought, and will continue to bring films for and by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and other communities that fall outside the heterosexual norm.

The BQFF is relatively unique in the queer subculture of India, since the only other festival of comparable scale takes place in the city of the Mumbai. There is indeed a South India focus at the BQFF. Over the last nine years, each edition of the festival has had between 1000 and 1500 registered participants, who have entered free and often donated their own money to sustain and keep the festival going. 

Yet, films have only been one part of the festival, which brings to Bangalore many other forms of art. One major aspect has been the performances, very often by members of the LGBT community. BQFF performances are a stage for non-professional performers to showcase dance, music or theatre. 

There is a spirit of trial and error, humour, and bawdiness in these performances, making them some of the best attended events of the festival with loud and raucous audience participation. Any image of film festivals as a purely silent space and studied nonchalance simply goes away during BQFF performances. This intense audience participation helps create a sense of the city’s progressive and LGBT community — something that is difficult to gauge except at events like BQFF or queer pride. 

Another important aspect of the festival has been photography and art exhibitions accompanying the film screenings.  The decade or so of BQFF has also coincided with a spike in the visibility of queer arts and culture in India. Over the years, audience members have narrated moving personal stories about BQFF: that this was the first space they came out as LGBT; or the first place they went on a date with someone of the same gender; or the first space they could cross dress and feel at home.

India’s cities are growing at a rapid speed outgrowing most countries. How should these settlements be governed and managed? In the Urban Debate, we will start with a One point seven film made by Director Andreas van de Laar where eminent Indian experts opine on the subject. Topics like the directly elected mayor, governance and administration reform, use of apps as citizen enablers and future of policy-based journalism are discussed in the film.

Film by Andreas van de Laar. The film will be followed by a panel discussion with V Manjula, Naresh Narasimhan, Ravichandar and Meera K.

Paris, Texas is probably Wim Wenders' best known movie, winning a number of international prizes including The Cannes Palme D'Or for Best Film in 1984.

Alice in the Cities I Wim Wenders - Tuesday 21st @ 17.00 at the NGMA

Phillip is a roving German reporter who, after a chance encounter with an elusive American woman, reluctantly accepts temporary custody of little Alice. Their friendship grows while travelling through various European cities on a search for the girl's grandmother. Inventive and witty, Wenders reflects on the influences of American pop culture on postwar Europe. Accepted to be one of Wenders' most poignant films Alice in the Cities subsequently won the 1974 German Critics Prize.

Bangalore International Short Film Festival - from Thursday 16th to Sunday 19th

Short filmmaking has its own form which is much different from feature films. Time, crispy story, essential shots contributes to make an impression on the short film. Short films are the attempts by the budding filmmakers where they show their talent and capability. The world today, has exposed us to this area of short films through festivals, where their work is appreciated and also the internet that offers visibility.

After the tremendous success that was BISFF 2017, we are all set to host the new edition from August 16-19, 2018. Just as every year, this is an attempt to understand the medium a little better and go a little further in inventing new forms of storytelling as filmmakers.

The festival showcases shorts from across the world, creating a physical space for a great audience experience and bringing together keen audience for the filmmakers. BISFF also exhibits movies packages from different parts of the globe to understand short filmmaking that today is viewed as an art form that needs a unique approach. Additionally the festival presents talks and panel discussions with leading thinkers and industry practitioners, enabling budding makers to interact with the best in the industry. BISFF also includes hands on learning experiences in workshops and demonstrations by professionals, putting together an exclusive audience experience and perhaps a space for makers to find what they are looking for.
