The Ska Vengers - Saturday 31st @ 21.00

For the uninitiated, The Ska Vengers is a Delhi based band who blend ‘ska’ rhythms with elements of dub, punk, jazz and rap to come up with a form of music that is refreshingly different, energetic and highly danceable. 

Keys man, Stefan Kaye rounded up a few of his musician friends to form the band in the fall of 2009. The band was put together since there was a lack of energetic, harder edged dance based live music in India. 

All members are highly experienced performers in their own right. Nikhil, Stefan and Tony play also in both post rock/disco group Emperor Minge and theatrical jazz outfit The Jass B’stards . They are regular performers on India’s first touring cabaret show ‘The Stiff Kittens’ Medicine Show’. Samara is also an actor and equally well known as a TV presenter on NDTV Good Times. Delhi Sultanate has garnered much praise for his highly skilled, socially conscious rap with drum ‘n’ bass team BASSFoundation and also his own project Word, Sound, Power. Raghav is also known as selecta with DJ collective ‘Reggae Rajahs’.

The Ska Vengers play very much for the moment as carefully worked out structures are at times elongated and receive dub treatment and Delhi Sultanate’s unique and highly rhythmic patois provides a suitable foil to Samara’s full throttle vocal delivery.

IFA takes pleasure in presenting the Project 560 Found Spaces Festival, showcasing six projects that engage with publ ic, found spaces in the city. It is a culmination of months of hard work of all our grantees across the city. This is the first time IFA is supporting an initiative of this nature and we hope that it becomes an occasion for all our well wishers, grantees, friends, donors and staff members to meet and experience a city that has always nurtured arts and culture in all its myriad forms.

The festival kicks off on June 5^th, with film screenings and panel discussions at the Rangoli Metro Art Center auditorium on M G Road. Find out what our grantees have to say about their project, while in conversation with experts from the field including Dilawar Ramdurg, Vikram Hathwar, BS Ramamurthy, Suresh Jayaram, Lawrence Liang, Deepa Subramanian and Lina Vincent Sunish. Also listen to Nikhil Chopra, C Basavali ngaiah and Maya Krishna Rao debate the relationship between performance and space largely from the point of view of their own engagements and practices.

The Tasveer Foundation is delighted to announce a unique lecture illustrated with demonstrations and visuals by renowned Bharatnatayam dancer and choreographer Malavika Sarukkai. This will be the ninth event in the quarterly series of lectures organised by the Tasveer Foundation in collaboration with the National Gallery of Modern Art.

Malavika Sarukkai performances have been described as ‘intense, extraordinary, luminous... phenomenally precise and unearthly’. Indian performance arts and dance are often described as drishya kavya or visual poetry, and in her talk Sarukkai will expand on the language of dance, focusing on her own distinctive, intellectual and creative approach to classical dance, and considering the close parallels between the language of Indian dance forms and the vocabulary of the visual arts; painting, sculpture, architecture; as well as philosophy, mythology, literature and music — all of which reflect one another and are intrinsically connected.  Sarukkai began dancing at the age of twelve, and is one of India’s leading classical dancers specialising in the traditional Bharatnatyam style, she describes her technique and process as both spiritual and intellectual, where “the rigour of her thinking translates into a bodily expression that is at once strictly grammatical and freely explorative”. The phrase 'innovative within tradition' has been used to describe her artistic mastery and her success in pushing the boundaries of traditional dance, bringing the artform into a contemporary context and giving it universal appeal. She has earrned international acclaim for her inspired choreography, which transports her audience to the heartbeat of the dance, taking Indian dance beyond cultural barriers and using the body as a conceptual and performative tool. Sarukkai has performed across India and internationally at The Kennedy Centre, Washington DC; the Lincoln Centre, New York; Jacob’s Pillow, America’s longest running dance festival and the Elizabeth Hall, UK. In recognition of her contribution to Indian classical dance, she has received numerous awards that include the Padmashree awarded by the President of India; the Kalaimamani, from the Government of Tamil Nadu; the SNA award from the Central Sangeet Natak Academi, Delhi; and the Mrinalini Sarabhai Award for excellence in Classical Dance. Sarukkai's exceptional perfomances have been filmed by the BBC, German Television and the French Art channel. Most recently, director Sumantra Ghosal celebrated Sarukkai's unique and singular approach to dance in the film ‘The Unseen Sequence’ which premiered at the prestigious Dance on Camera Festival at the Lincoln Center, New York in early 2014.

Overwhelmed by a society characterized by helpfulness and carelessness, worship and disrespect, beauty and tragedy, artist Jivan Frenster decided to examine the ambivalence of the reality he encountered.  In dealing with a world full of contradictions, you are forced to practice acceptance, which in a negative sense may lead to insensibility and indifference. 

Attempting to create a contemporary portrait of Indian society, Jivan is investigating this complex interrelationship in an assemblage that oscillates between celebration and critique, which will be presented in his final show titled ' A two letter poem ~ O   K'.

Jivan's residency is supported by the Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan 

Nanna Bharatiya Jeevana | Megumi Sakakida - Sunday 25th @ 11.30

Japanese artist Megumi Sakakida is now a Bangalore-based artist, working towards bridging the Japanese and Indian Culture . A graduate of art and design from Kyoto University and she has studied post graduation in painting at Chitrakala Parishat, Bangalore. The artist speaks fluent Kannada which she has managed to learn within a few months of her stay in Bangalore. Megumi’s paintings are about the habits, lifestyle and belief systems of Indians in general and about Karnataka people in particular. Her artworks contains Kannada words, the food habits, the domestic lives of the local people. She is a very talented artist and a graphic novelist, attracted to the Kannada culture and has been reflected thoroughly in her lifestyle as well as her artistic outlook. Hence her works bridge a cultural relationship between Japanese culture and Indian/Kannada culture.

The inauguration is followed by Indian and Japanese Music Program by Royal Echo Choir at Rangasthala at 12.15 pm

Ithihaasa | That which may have been by Daniela Hohenberger - Saturday 24th @ 12.00

Not only did Daniela introduce several women to the art of photography, she also inspired them to capture a visual narrative of their lives. Some of these women - rural and urban -  were using a camera for the first time ever.

Take a trip into the countryside to experience Ithihaasa - that which may have been by Daniela Hohenberger, bangaloREsident@Infinite Souls.  The photographs by the women of Vardenahalli will be displayed in the village itself and those by women from the City are exhibited next door in Infinite Souls. Daniela and her group of women photographers will engage in a discussion with visitors.

All are welcome to attend the event on their own!

Ragini Bhow's work addresses the nature of seeing, illusion, and the human perception of reality. By altering the familiar into the unfamiliar, she is able to traverse an ambiguous space that raises questions on what it means to view nature from the identity of a terrestrial. Her practice explores material relationships that develop from aesthetic observation, visceral exchange, and conversation. Through juxtapositions of man-made elements with the found organic, such as wood and neon light, she transforms the mundane into sacred artifacts that face an alternate dimension.

Ragini completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Minnesota in 2013 with an academic background in Biology. She has been a current resident for 3 months at 1.Shanthiroad.

Vidyun Sabhaney, a graphic storyteller from Delhi, was supported by IFA to study the visual storytelling techniques of three image-based folk performance traditions—Patuachitra from Bengal, Kaavad from Rajasthan and Togalu Gombeyatta from Karnataka—towards enriching her own practice. Her research culminated in a three-day workshop in New Delhi, titled Image & Word, on traditional and contemp orary visual storytelling practices in India. Vidyun will share her experience of travelling to remote villages and meeting master artists who remain passionate about their practice despite the harsh realities of their environment. She will also talk about the impact this study has had on her own practice.

M V Bhaskar received an IFA grant to digitally replicate the 17th century Ramayana murals of the Chengam Venugopala Parthasarthy temple in Tamil Nadu. Temple and court spaces have vast stretches of narrative mural paintings, engaged in a losing battle with time and the administration. 'If they can't be saved there, save them elsewhere, through documentation, digital restoration and replication on other media including cloth (kalamkari), film (animation), etc.', believes Bhaskar, who has been document ing and archiving these murals for eight years. He will share his explorations into these alternative forms of mural conservation, reconstruction and restoration.

Frayn’s play Copenhagen speculates on what might have transpired during a meeting between Nobel laureates Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg inCopenhagen in September 1941, at the height of the German advance into Russia and just three months before America’s entry into the war. The power of National Socialist Germany was at its pinnacle, and the Germans had just been made aware, through Swedish sources, of U.S. plans to build an atomic bomb.

The meeting was at Heisenberg’s behest. As Germany’s leading theoretical physicist and head of the German Uranium Club, the organ which would assess the possible war uses of nuclear energy, he was the man best situated to advise his government on the creation of an atomic bomb. The older Bohr was not only a professional colleague of Heisenberg, but a close personal friend as well. The play ponders the possible reasons for Heisenberg’s visit, linking them to the failure of the Germans to develop the bomb
