BLOCK.BUSTER | Jürgen Mayer H - Saturday 31st @ 18.00
Jürgen Mayer H.´s exhibition BLOCK.BUSTER looks at the works of J. MAYER H. as activators for public space and the redefinition of our urban environment. One major investment of J. MAYER H. is looking at expanding the material of architecture and the boundaries of the discipline. The evolution of new media and new materials redefines our understanding of space as a platform for communication and a catalyst for sociocultural interactivity.
J. MAYER H. und Partner, Architekten focuses on works at the intersection of architecture, communication and new technology. Recent projects include the Court of Justice in Hasselt, Belgium, the OLS House near Stuttgart, Germany, the residential building JOH3 in Berlin, Germany and Metropol Parasol, the redevelopment of the Plaza de la Encarnacion in Sevilla, Spain; Lazika Pier Scuplture and several public and infrastructural projects in Georgia, for example an airport in Mestia, the border checkpoint in Sarpi and three rest stops along the highway in Gori and Locchini. From urban planning schemes and buildings to installation work and objects with new materials, the relationship between the human body, technology and nature form the background for a new production of space.

The Past Constanza Macras | DorkyPark + Oscar Bianchi - Monday 9th @ 19.30
In order to incorporate a city-specific slant to The Past, Macras undertook an in-depth exploration of Bangalore's past and present, so watch out for her choreographic interpretation of our City's memory.
What happens with our memories, what happens to those who are remembering when these physical places are destroyed? Macras talked to eyewitnesses who remember cities that no longer exist in the same form today.
The actions in the piece refer to the ancient techniques of ars memoriae, whereby in order to recall the thing to be remembered, we first have to find and organise our impressions. At the heart of this mnemonic technique is spatial orientation: how do we use rooms and places to remember?
The piece is the result of a close collaboration with Swiss/ Italian composer Oscar Bianchi, who composed music delving into collective and individual memory, and celebrates sound as a physical, sometimes, muscular place.
The Past explores architectonic places as narrative instruments of our history: in the rewriting of it, for overcoming the wounds of the past, and for understanding contemporary events (personal and global) as part of a constant cycle.

Eugene Alcalay | piano recital - Tuesday 20th @ 19.30
A native of Bucharest, Romania, pianist Eugene Alcalay began playing at age two and composing at age eight. In 1984 Eugene came under the tutelage of Leonard Bernstein, who affirmed his “outstanding talent as both a performer and composer”. Eugene became the first recipient of The Leonard Bernstein Scholarship for gifted young musicians at Indiana University School of Music, where he earned Bachelor’s Degrees in both Piano and Composition. Aided by Maestro Bernstein, Eugene continued his studies at The Curtis Institute of Music and then The Juilliard School, where he attained Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Piano Performance. His teachers included Seymour Lipkin, Robert McDonald, Karen Shaw, James Tocco, Milton Babbitt & Ned Rorem. Currently Associate Professor of Piano at University of Wisconsin—Platteville, Eugene’s performance career has taken him to three continents & such U.S venues as Alice Tully Hall and Carnegie Hall--Isaac Stern Auditorium. He has spent summers at prestigious international music festivals such as Tanglewood, Taos, Kneisel Hall and Ravinia. In addition, he served as Piano and Chamber Music Faculty at the Sixth International Music Festival and School in Bogota, Colombia, a country which he revisited in 2003 as a Fulbright Scholar, and in 2004, as Fulbright Senior Specialist/Artist in Residence. He has also given master classes and judged piano competitions in Europe and the United States. In 2005 he was invited to join the International Roster of Steinway Artists. His 2007 London debut, sponsored by Steinway and the Beethoven Piano Society of Europe, was “highly acclaimed” as a “poetic” and “memorable recital”: in his review, Alberto Portugheis emphasized “Alcalay's command of line, color, temperament, imagination” and the “extraordinary qualities” of his pianism. Eugene’s CD, “Lyrical Liszt”, released in 2008 by the Partita Records label, has been praised for “poetry, sensitivity… admirable tonal variety…beautiful playing throughout” (EPTA UK). His 2010 Paris debut was preceded by a “superb” recital to a large audience in London: displaying “power and gusto” as well as “kaleidoscopic lyrical qualities”, Eugene proved himself “an interpreter of rare distinction” (Malcolm Miller, Music & Vision). Kya Hai Ki, Kya Nai Ki: Dakhani - A Tongue Untied is an intimate look at the tradition of comic-satire performance poetry in Dakhani (Urdu of the Deccan) known as Mizahiya Shayri. It examines the history of the tradition, styles, content of the pioneers, and also of the contemporary poets. It delves into how the practice of public performance poetry at mushairas is linked with not just the decline of Muslim social culture in the Deccan, but also the fall of the Hyderabad state and the general decline of Urdu.

Inaugural Concert for Cadenza 2015 - A Festival of Classical & Folk Music around the World
Recital by Meagan Alphonso Young Pianist & Winner of the Craen Foundation Competition
Meagan Alphonso began her musical studies at the age of 12 with her aunt Regina D’Souza & later with Blossom Mendonca from 2009 and passed her DipABRSM & ATCL with Distinction. She has since done her Dip ABRSM winning a local award & also the LTCL winning the Kathleen Taylorsmith prize & the Dinshaw & Piroza Mistry prize & has performed at the Young Talent concert series organized by the Stop Gaps Cultural Academy in 2012. She passed her Grade 6 ABRSM violin exam with high distinction & won the ABRSM best candidate from Mumbai award. She has played the violin with the Bombay Chamber Orchestra (BCO), Indian National Youth Orchestra (INYO) & Indian Youth Orchestra (IYO) in association with the Canadian National Youth Orchestra (CIYO). Meagan attended summer school for piano at the Chetam’s International Summer School and Festival for Pianists, Manchester and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2013 where she received masterclasses from Fali Pavri, Aaron Shorr, Sam Wong, Jan Kadlubski. She was one of the few selected for a masterclass with Steven Osborne & was offered admission for the B.Mus course at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS).
She was selected as the Young Musician of the Year 2014, an award granted by the Olga and Jules Craen Foundation (OJCF). As part of the OJC–YMOY award, attended summer school in Nice & Paris worked with Pascale Roge & Phillip Entremont, also training from Rena Shereshevskaya & Bruno Rigutto both professors at the prestigious Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris. She has worked in the field of music at Fazlani La’ Acadamie Globale, Mehli Mehta Music Foundation & plays for the School of Ballet & Contemporary Dance for their ballet exams in Mumbai. She also plays light music in duos, trios & quartets & has performed at several concerts, one of them being at the Russian Centre for Science & Culture to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the World’s first Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin’s flight into Space. She has also sung for the Living Voices Choir. She also plays the concert pedal harp & has completed her B.A. in Psychology & Sociology with Mumbai University.

Theatre lovers, acting enthusiasts, performers and all of you are invited to join as Sudhanva speaks about his journey in theatre, his experiences with street theatre, and 'The JaNaM of Studio Safdar.'
Sudhanva is an actor and director with Jana Natya Manch (Janam), a radical political theatre collective based in New Delhi. He has been involved in the creation of dozens of street, proscenium and other performances, and has lectured and led workshops in institutions across India, as well as in Germany, Poland, the US and UK. He has held teaching positions at the National Institute of Design (Ahmedabad) and the AJK Mass Communication Research Centre (Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi).
Sudhanva writes on theatre and politics, and has edited Theatre of the Streets: The Jana Natya Manch Experience (Janam 2007) and co-edited Our Stage: The Pleasures and Perils of Theatre Practice in India Today (Tulika 2009). He has co-directed two documentary films on Naya Theatre and Habib Tanvir. He is a member of the Core Team of the India Theatre Forum. Since 1999, he has headed LeftWord Books, an independent publishing house, as Managing Editor, as well as May Day Bookstore and Cafe since 2012. He has been involved in the conceptualisation, creation, administration and programming of Studio Safdar, Shadi Khampur. His default mode of transport is the bicycle.
