Crossing the Jungle | Saskia Groneberg & Bettina Lockemann - Saturday 28th @ 19.30

Two bangaloREsidents. Two German photographers. Two journeys of discovery. Two differing takes on the City: “Garden City” and “Commuter Space”. Brought together on a single platform: “Crossing the Jungle.” Join us for the final showing of Saskia Groneberg, bangaloREsident@MOD and Bettina Lockemann, bangaloREsident@IIHS on Saturday May 28, 2016, 7.30 p.m. at the Bhavan.

Saskia has been looking at growth within the urban sphere, starting off from the parks forming the garden city, expanding her observations to construction and situations around newly-constructed areas. Saskia finds beauty in locations the passerby may not consider worth looking at, thus providing an unexpected perspective on the urban jungle.

In her photographic explorations of mobility, Bettina encounters traffic jams, waving motorists, and students solving math problems on BMTC buses. She takes part in the official opening of the tunnel section of Namma Metro, finds paths designed for bicyclists blocked by parked cars, and crosses busy intersections. Her work delves into the atmosphere of transit in Bangalore, providing a view from the outside on situations that the Bangalore audience will be familiar with, from their day-to-day experience.

Picturing the City: Mobility | Bettina Lockemann - Saturday 21st @ 14.00

bangaloREsident@IIHS Bettina Lockemann has spent the last few weeks negotiating the traffic in Bangalore - and has survived!

She shares her experience and expertise at a Workshop this weekend at IIHS (Indian Institute for Human Settlements).

This workshop will discuss questions on how our experience of the city can be reflected in photographs. With a focus on mobility issues, learners will discover perspectives of the pedestrian, cyclist, passenger in an auto or bus, etc. The aim is to actively perceive our environment and transfer this perception into a visual image.

The workshop will start with a short reading and a discussion on topics related to the city and mobility. After that learners will go out on the streets and individually explore the city with the camera, before coming back to discuss their experiences and the pictures taken.

Participants are requested to carry a camera or camera phone and be prepared to upload photos on a computer.

In her works, Bettina Lockemann deals mainly with urban situations. She looks for her topics in spaces of urban agglomeration and realises them with photography and video. Born and raised in Berlin, she studied photography and media art at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig and took a Ph.D in art history at Stuttgart State Academy of Visual Arts. Currently she is working as freelance artist and art historian after teaching for 15 years at various art schools and universities in Germany and Switzerland, most recently as Professor of Practice and Theory of Photography at Braunschweig University of Art

at home at the zoo - Friday 6th & Saturday 7th @ 20.00 + Sunday 8th @ 18.30

Edward Albee has added an opening act to the now iconic Zoo Story and what has emerged is At Home at the Zoo, a searing study of life and loneliness - boring outside, brutal inside.

Albee had always felt that Peter's character was not etched enough and so, forty years later in 2004, he added an Act One in which we see Peter and his wife, Ann. So was born At Home at the Zoo.
