B R Somashekar Jois is a konnakkol and mridangam artist, vocalist, music composer and audio engineer. He has been a disciple of Vidwan Sri K N Krishnamurthy, Kalaimamani Sri K V Prasad and Vidwan Sri B C Manjunath, all well-known percussionists.
He specialises in konnakkol (a traditional art form that involves reciting or orally articulating Carnatic percussion syllables). He was the first such artist in Karnataka to secure an 'A Grade' in konnakkol from All India Radio and recipient of Percussive Arts Centre-CMANA Endowment Award. He has performed at over 1,500 concerts and is on a mission to promote konnakkol and popularize it among musicians and music lovers. He has presented several Lecture Demonstrations on the konnakkol at venues like AIR Bangalore, Bangalore Gayana Samaja, Percussive Arts Center, Suswaralaya College of Music, Mysore JSS Sangeetha Sabha, ANANYA and more.
