Textiles, weaving and trade in south India – from the medieval period till today - Saturday 7th

INTACH Bengaluru announces a one-day workshop on ‘Textiles, weaving and trade in south India – from the medieval period till today.’ If you want to know more about trade, textiles in trade, different techniques of weaving, and how designs were and are made, this workshop is for you! You will learn about all of this and about how some of them are being revived today. You can even try your hand at making some designs!

The workshop includes an introduction to trade and textiles through history; an activity-session where participants will learn how designs were made using natural materials, such as, for example, how vegetables like bendekayi (ladies' fingers) were used as binders; and a field trip to a weaver’s resource centre where we will learn how looms work, how they looked a few hundred years ago, the different types of weaving and also a little about different types of dyeing. Participants are encouraged to bring along old pieces of cloth to the workshop so they can try their hand at making designs during the morning’s activity session!

The workshop will be led by Dr Radhika Seshan, a professor of History at the University of Pune. Dr Seshan has researched and written extensively on trade and politics in the medieval period, on gender and on several other areas in history.

The cost of this one day workshop will be Rs.1000 per person. Advance payment and registration is required. If you would like to register, please email us at intach.blr@gmail.com
