Edgar Allan Poe's stature as one of the greatest and most significant figures in world literature is primarily based on his insightful and profound short stories and poems. He is credited with being a pioneer of the horror story and the inventor of the detective fiction genre. The Edgar Allan Poe Awards, popularly called the Edgars, honour the best in mystery fiction, non-fiction, television, film and theatre. 'The Fall of the House of Usher', 'The Black Cat' and 'The Murder of Marie Roget' are some of his prominent works.

Mahasweta Devi is one of India's foremost writers whose trenchant and powerful fiction has won her recognition in the form of the Sahitya Akademi, Jnanpith and Ramon Magasaysay awards. She has also been honoured with the Padma Shree and Padma Vibhushan, for her lifelong social activism among the dispossessed tribal communities and marginalised people in the country. Some of her prominent works are 'Aranyer Adhikar', 'Hazaar Chaurashir Maa' and 'Rudaali'.
