Folk Festival - from Friday 8th

The first of its kind International Folk Festival is being organized by The Times of India in Bengaluru, a city rich in cultural heritage and a knowledgeable populace hungry for more. It begins on 8th August 2014 at the serene and picturesque lawns of the Jayamahal Palace and takes everyone through a kaleidoscope of folk and cultural extravaganza till the evening of 10thAugust 2014. It will showcase folk art forms from every part of India from Yakshagana, Gombeyaata, Purulia Chau, Satriya dance, Mallakhamb to Waee singers of Kutch, Gujarat and Mooralala Marawada, Sufiana Qawwali, OttanThullal and others; international folk troupes from Indonesia, Norway and Sri Lanka; an eclectic palette of film shows, panel discussions and talks, as well as exhibitions of crafts and wares of rural craftsmen, along with a delectable fare of Indian cuisine. Several eminent artists like Jnanapeetha awardees like Dr. Chandrasekhar Kambara and Dr. Girish Karnad, along with a royal family of Indonesia will participate in this prestigious festival.

The Chamber Orchestra of the Bangalore School of Music is back on the musical scene to delight music lovers. 24 seasoned performers are in top form after intense rehearsals over several weeks comprising Faculty members, senior artistes & talented students & professionals under the able baton of Maestro Narayanaswamy V., the Orchestra has emerged as one the country can be proud of.

The core Chamber group consists of Faculty Members, senior students and associates of the Music School, while professional long term associates join for major presentations.  The youngest members are 9 and 12 years old.

Damocracy - Tuesday 5th @ 18.45

A documentary that debunks the myth of large-scale dams as clean energy and a solution to climate change. It records the priceless cultural and natural heritage the world would lose in the Amazon and Mesopotamia if two planned large-scale dams are built, Belo Monte dam in Brazil, and Ilisu dam in Turkey.

Seth Tobocman & Orijit Sen - Friday 8th @ 19.00

Political Comic Book Artist Seth Tobocman will do a presentation dealing with the development of his art, his ideas, his life, his influences over three decades, from opposing Ronald Reagan in the 1980s, to going to Palestine in 2002, to the reconstruction of New Orleans, to supporting Occupy Wall Street.

Seth Tobocman, born in 1958, is a comic book artist with strong political convictions. In 1979 he founded the magazine World War 3 Illustrated with Peter Kuper and he continues to edit that publication today. He is the author of a number of graphic books including: YOU DON’T HAVE TO FUCK PEOPLE OVER TO SURVIVE, WAR IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD, PORTRAITS OF ISRAELIS AND PALESTINIANS, DISASTER AND RESISTANCE and UNDERSTANDING THE CRASH. Most recently he edited WORLD WAR 3 ILLUSTRATED 1979-2014 with Peter Kuper. Seth Tobocman's illustrations have appeared in The New York Times, The Village Voice and many other publications. His prints and originals have been displayed at The Museum of Modern Art, The New Museum Of Contemporary Art, The Museum Of The City Of Ravenna, Exit Art Gallery, Abcnorio and other spaces. His images have been used as posters, banners, murals, patches and tattoos by people’s movements all over the world from The Squatters in New York’s Lower East Side to the African National Congress in South Africa.

Orijit Sen will present his work with visual narratives.

Orijit Sen (born 1963) is an artist and graphic designer based in New Delhi, India. He studied at the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, and has been involved in graphic, textile, exhibition and museum design projects since 1989. He is one of the founders of People Tree - a collaborative studio and retail store for artists, designers and craftspeople. Orijit started collecting and drawing comics from his early teens, and has subsequently been deeply involved with the development of comics and graphic novels in India. His pioneering work "River of Stories" (Kalpavriksh 1994) is considered by many to be India's first true graphic novel. He is a co-founder of the Pao Collective of graphic artists, and a key figure behind the award winning "Pao:The Anthology of Comics#1" (Penguin 2012). Internationally, his comics and graphic art have been published and exhibited in exhibits and collections in Switzerland, Japan, South Africa and Canada.
