Surekha presents her works - Friday 7th @ 18.00
Surekha over the last decade has been exploring how video as an artistic form negotiates contemporary public and private space. She uses photography and video installations to interrelate the domains of archiving, documenting and performing. In her work, she also explores the wider cultural, political and subjective connotations in the context of art and its historicity. Altogether, this amounts to a specific artistic modality and art activism that she is deeply involved with, in Bengaluru.
She studied art in Ken School of art Bangalore and Post graduation in Santiniketan and short term film workshops in No.w.here London.

Since 2005 Bangalore is the only city in the world that hosts a film festival exclusively dedicated to water. As one of the key collaborators of Voices from the Waters, the Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan Bangalore is one of the venues for the screenings.
Voices from the Waters, the International Travelling Film Festivalwas initiated by Bangalore Film Society, as an effective way of reaching out to the uninitiated on water issues with an emphasis on high school, college students and the youth. The programme aims to bring together high school and college students, environmentalists, scientists, policy makers, film-makers, lecturers, scholars and working professionals from all walks of life to engage in a process of learning and debate on various water issues from around the world. It gives film-makers a chance to exhibit their works to a broader and diverse audience to enhance water and environmental consciousness. The major resonance and the number of films received every year underline the global concern for water.
Water-Works by Markus Heinsdorff - Friday 29th @ 19.00
Markus Heinsdorff, designer of the marvellous pavilions at the recently-concluded Indo-German Urban Mela, lets us in on another side of his artistry. The exhibitionWasser-Werke / Water-Works, supported by the Bavarian State Chancellory, offers an aesthetic perspective on water.
Water needs no introduction as one of the most hotly-debated topics worldwide, inspiring the whole gamut of emotions and expressions. The thought-provoking exposition at the Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan comprises objects, installations and photographs by Markus Heinsdorff.
The Exhibition runs parallel to the 7th Edition of the Film Festival: Voices from the Waters for which the Goethe-Institut is one of the screening venues.
The Inauguration of the Exhibition on August 29, 2012, 7.00 p.m., is in the presence of the artist. Refreshments will be served before the event.

Bloody Boys follows three families through three parallel stories... Birgitta decides to end her apartment lease to move in with yet another man, leaving her son, Simon, without a place to stay. Simon's dad, Tomas, seems like the only one to turn to, but he has long since given up on the world... Lina asks for a divorce, which prompts Gunnar to start writing a book on the cruel ways of love and marriage. Their adoptive son, Bjorn, is forced out on his own where he starts to ponder identity and being, thoughts that lead him into unknown territory... Ida and Kristoffer share a tragic heritage which they are struggling to break free from. Kristoffer does his best to ease his mother through her fits of rage, while longing for a less complicated life. Ida tries all kinds of remedies for her affliction, but to no avail, and eventually the source of the problem is traced back up the bloodline... Bloody Boys accounts for the workings of downward spirals, whose patterns drag individuals as well as their families into them. The film depicts the human aspects of a number of brutal proceedings, where life itself may be the price of freedom.

Akram Khan Dance Company - Wednesday 5th @ 19.00
Gnosis is a
recent creation by Akram Khan in which he combines his classical Indian and
contemporary dance roots. It begins as Khan revisits the classical motifs of
two earlier works, Polaroid Feet and Tarana. We follow him on a pathway of
transformation, culminating in a shattering conclusion. Pursuing the idea of
the 'knowledge within', it is an exploration of the inner and outer battles of
characters, the human and the godly.
Drawing
from sources both ancient and modern, Gnosis is also inspired by the Hindu epic
Mahabharata, in particular the story of Gandhari, the wife of the blind king
who blindfolds herself for life to share his journey. It explores the notion of
inner knowledge and clouded vision, seeing darkness and yet being blind to
light.
Khan is
accompanied on stage by an ensemble of exceptional musicians from around the
world and acclaimed guest artist Fang-Yi Sheu from Taiwan.

The film shares special moments that the filmmaker experienced with his camera, a special bonding over a period of 4 years, in terms of creating cinematic imagery, relating, exploring, seeking and interpreting notions of his reality. It is a memory of a camera which perished in the Tsunami, along with its last filmed footage. It’s last recorded footage, an elusive image, evoking multiple possibilities, seeking parallels and new perspectives.
The filmmaker will be present at the screening.

A brief note on Noh :
Japanese drama
before the Meiji Restoration consists of three main types of performance: the
Noh play, Kabuki and the puppet drama or Joruri. Noh, the earliest of three,
was certainly in existence six hundred years ago and was itself the result of a
long and gradual development.In the middle of the eleventh century an early
form in the line which was to give rise to Noh consisted of simple humorous
farces based on such characters as immoral priests and nuns and countrymen visiting
the capital for the first time. Great Buddhist temples employed professional
players to perform at the times of festivals and ceremonies, and largely as a
result of this, the humorous plays came to be displaced by others of a more
serious nature.
Many of these later plays were designed to explain
the significance of religious rites or to depict Buddhist legends for the
simple people, and although they came to be more highly regarded than the
humorous plays, the latter did not disappear The comedies known as Kyogen,
which are still given today as interludes between Noh plays, bear witness to
the unbroken existence of this type of play, for many of them are based on the
same themes as were used in comedies of the eleventh century. The series of
plays soon spread beyond the confines of the temples and thus gained greater
freedom in the choice if their material. They came to aim not at religious
teaching but at the depiction of artistic beauty by means of song and dance,
and it is at this stage that they become Noh. In order to achieve this aim full
use was made of the rich store of earlier Japanese literature and of numerous song
and dance entertainments current at the time. Themes ware based on incidents in
history or literature and the sung parts of the texts richly embellished with
appropriate quotations from poetry. Various types of music were blended to form
a unique style and dances performed in other types of entertainment were
adapted and fitted in with the music and song to make the composite art of Noh.

to setup and manage the garden to get the vegetables in sustainable form. As
part of the hands-on session, the participants will be sowing 5 – 6 different
vegetables seeds in a small patch of garden. In addition, you will also get 3

you to carry out the gardening with weekly mail communication from us for the
vegetables that you want to grow.

The play is produced by the Unicorn Theatre, UK’s flagship theatre for young audience, with support from the British Council in association with Trestle Theatre.
After a freak snowstorm on the southern tip of India, Kumar disappears. Gowri, his best friend, discovers that he has been captured by the formidable Snow Queen, and embarks on a journey across the length and breadth of the continent to save him.
The central character, Gowrie travels from the Tamil Nadu town of Kanyakumari to the snowy mountains of Kashmir, visiting en route the Kerala backwaters, glitzy Bollywood and the barren Chambal Hills in central India, in her quest to rescue Kumar from the Snow Queen. The play looks at themes of loss, love, loyalty and friendship in the context of what it is to be a teenager today and casts children as the agent of change in a world where the adults have been on a course of destruction.

Chinese Ink Painting Workshop - Thursday 16th @ 13.00
Come and join the Chinese Ink Painting Workshop and appreciate directly the traditional practices and versatility of Chinese brush painting under the expert guidance of Mr K S Srinivasa Murthy.
The Chinese Ink Painting Workshop is being held at NGMA Bengaluru from 16th August 2012 to 25th August 2012. The daily timing is from 10 am to 1 pm in two sessions with a ten minute break at 11:20 am.
Admission to workshop is limited to 20 participants on first come first serve basis.

Materials to be brought by each participant:
1. One bottle of Chinese Ink (available in liquid form in small containers in Bengaluru)
2. Six Chinese brushes: three kinds each in a small and medium size: wolf hair, rabbit hair, mixed hair. The ‘small’ and the ‘medium’ sizes are as the usual bristle
sizes brushes of 4-6 and 14-16 used as water color brushes.
3. Chinese colors/ gauche colors: lemon yellow, yellow ochre, mineral red (cinnabar), Indigo blue, apple green, sky blue and poster white.
4. About 20 sheets of (absorbent) Chinese paper commonly known as ‘rice paper’.
5. A sketch book or a few sketching papers along with charcoal/pen/pencil
6. The Chinese ink is indelible when stained. The participants are advised to protect their outfits, say by wearing aprons.
