The play is a satirical fantasy about a Utopian world that exposes our own intensely transactional everyday world that is so emptied of mutual trust among people, the very purpose of community living and the simple enjoyment of life and its pleasures. In Badalda's Beyond (the Land of) Hattamala, Kena and Becha, two simple-minded thieves jump into a river and are carried off into a strange land where everything is topsy-turvy - as far as they can make out - but, if they will only look closer, is perhaps the way it ought to be.
The play, using folk and traditional idiom, provides Sircar the scope to go beyond the proscenium theatre into a magical world of pure theatre where actors make the narrative, create the landscape and mood and engage the audience in a thought-provoking discourse through wonder and laughter. The play makes us all children, makes us all wonder and laugh at ourselves. Playwright: Badal Sircar Directed by Prakash Belawadi Ticket : Rs 150 | ||
